Biological Chemistry Group
The BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY group was created about 20 years ago and includes chemists, pharmacists and molecular biologists. Currently it is formed by 2 Full Professors, 2 Emeritus Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 4 Assistant Professors, 2 Senior Researcher and 10 pre-doctoral students.
Throughout this course several undergraduate students and five Master’s students in Drug Discovery are doing their Bachelor´s Thesis (TFG) and Master´s Thesis (TFM) in the group.
Research
The research carried out in the group is in the areas of Synthetic, Medical and Bioorganic Chemistry. The lines that are currently active are focused on:
- Design and synthesis of bioactive compounds against targets involved in renal disease
- Development of new synthetic methodologies
- Synthesis, reactivity and applications of azaborines
- Development of new agents for cell staining and bioimaging
The group is currently financed with competitive projects from Ministerio Economía, Industria y Competitividad, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Comunidad de Madrid (Biomedicine program) y Universidad de Alcalá.
It is integrated in prestigious research networks such as RETICS (Red Temática de Investigación Cooperativa en Salud, Instituto de Salud Carlos III), IRICYS (Instituto Ramón y Cajal de Investigación Sanitaria), INNOREN – Comunidad de Madrid (Enfermedad Renal Crónica: Nuevas Estrategias para la Prevención, Diagnóstico y Tratamiento), REDFIBRO (Red de Investigación Integrada en Fibrosis Orgánica) and belongs to Instituto de Investigación Química Andrés M. del Río (IQAR).
